Success at Calving with Improved Dry Cow Management

Improving dry cow nutrition has transformed calving outcomes for Co. Antrim dairy farmer, Stephen Cochrane.

Up until last year, Stephen had never considered feeding concentrates to dry cows before calving. His herd was generally in good condition, with only the occasional case of milk fever or a retained placenta. But when he introduced Fane Valley Feeds’ Dry Cow Primer Nut to his dry cow diet, he saw cow performance take a clear step forward.

“In the past I thought my cows were doing well, but the difference since feeding Dry Cow Primer Nuts has been very positive,” Stephen explains. “Average yield for both cows and heifers has increased by almost 7kg per head over the past six months” as well as maintaining cow health and fertility.

Stephen uses selective dry cow therapy and ensures a minimum dry period of eight weeks. During this time, cows are housed and fed 3rd cut silage, which he deliberately allows to head out before harvesting. This approach maximises dry matter intake, controls energy supply, and reduces potassium levels — a key factor in preventing milk fever.

Three weeks before calving, Stephen introduces 2kg per head per day of Dry Cow Primer Nut, specially formulated to meet the energy, vitamin and mineral needs of transition cows. This targeted feeding supports metabolic stability, strengthens immunity, and prepares cows for a smooth start to lactation.

Since adopting this strategy, Stephen has seen:

  • Cows calving down well, with milk fever virtually eliminated
  • Stronger, healthier transitions with no retained cleansings
  • Peak yield in the cows (<100 days) has lifted by just over 8kg of milk per cow
  • 9% more of the herd are sustaining yields above 40kg

“Cows are hitting peak production sooner, maintaining yield better, and the benefits are evident right across the herd,” says Stephen. What started as a small adjustment on farm is now an essential part of the preparation for lactation.

Stephen’s experience shows how a small change in dry cow management can deliver significant improvements in health, performance, and profitability.
